Our Community

While the Board of Directors provides strategic leadership and performs various roles supporting the Centre’s mission, it is not a closed community. We welcome those with an interest in maritime security, understanding a few basic rules:

  • The Centre is a non-partisan entity and does not engage in promoting one party’s political agenda or another. We remain apart from such discussions, seeking to provide relevant, reliable, and timely guidance and advice when and where it can make a difference.
  • The Centre is an inclusive entity focusing on what different groups bring to the discussion. We welcome divergent opinions and foster respectful discussions on the understanding that the Centre’s discussions focus on the issues at hand.
  • The Centre is a space that fosters innovation within its community. We are willing to examine new approaches as we work towards reasonable, reliable, and relevant responses to maritime security challenges.

Different Opportunities to Become Involved

We offer different levels of involvement within our community with no annual membership costs. These depend upon the following factors:

  • Your education and training within the maritime security (or similar) domains.
  • Your experience within the maritime security domain.
  • Your motivation for participation.

Where you begin this journey is not necessarily where you remain in the future. As our challenges and environments evolve, so can your involvement within the Centre. Each movement is subject to ratification by the Board of Directors. The table below describes our four levels. Please note that any lists or examples are strictly for illustrative purposes.

LevelEducation / TrainingExperienceKinds of Involvement
DirectorUniversity graduate-level education or industry certification associated with a responsible charge position (such as Master Mariner – Unlimited Tonnage).Over 10 yearsStrategic planning and setting the direction of the Centre.

Participation in significant and complex projects.
AssociateUniversity undergraduate (including professional certificate) or college education in the maritime, security, supply chain, or environmental sciences.Over 3 yearsParticipation in projects directly related to your education and experience.
AffiliateProfessional certification in an association that focuses on maritime, security, or similar domains. No experience necessaryParticipation in projects directly related to your education and experience under supervision of an experienced member.
StudentInvolved in a course of study within the security or maritime space. No experience necessaryParticipation on projects as an understudy or to build experience as the course of study continues.

The above should be considered guidelines. There will always be cases where an individual has significant experience but may not meet these thresholds. In those cases, a simple discussion can be had with a member of the Board to see where the best fit may be. For example, a member of the Royal Canadian Navy may have significant experience within the maritime security space but may hold a degree in a different domain. In this case, the member would approach a Board member to determine the best fit. The Board, a combination of academics and practitioners, recognizes that an individual’s potential contribution may come from various circumstances.

No Fees

The Centre recognizes that many practitioners and aspiring professionals carry a significant financial burden regarding membership fees. This can deter people from becoming engaged in communities of practice.

To address this, we avoid annual membership fees and collect a modest administrative fee for our project costs. This approach allows us to continue building capacity within the maritime space.
